Physical or Chemical Properties

Until now the discussion on physical and chemical properties still brought up by students. I wonder why. So I hope the article here will release the tension and hope it gives benefit to those who still wondering the difference between physical and chemical properties. Good Luck!

THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN PHYSICAL DAN CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
  • Used to observe and describe matter
  • Can be observe wothoiut changing the composition of matter
  • Physical properties include:-
      1. colour
      2. appearance
      3. odour
      4. density
      5. solubility in water/ organic solvent
      6. melting and boiling point
      7. conductivity of electricity
    • these physical properties normally can be measured and it is standardise in STP
  • Chemical properties :
      1. Properties that change the chemical nature of matter (Normally after the reaction)
      2. Normallly can be represented by chemical equation
Example:
a) Acid- reacts with base to form salt and water only
        • reacts with reactive metals such as Mg,Zn, Al,Fe to release hydrogen gas only
        • reacts with CaCO3 to release CO2
b) base – reacts with acid to form water and salt only
- Na2O3K2O dissolve in water to form alkali
